Northeast Pennsylvania Waterfalls
Where the Water Finds Its Way
Photographs by John Alexiou
There is something about the waterfalls in Northeast Pennsylvania that makes me slow down. The water moves over the rock in its own way, sometimes spreading across a whole ledge and sometimes finding a narrow opening between the walls. The moss, the trees, and the darker pools are just as much a part of the picture as the falls.
What catches my eye is the contrast. The rock stays sharp and still while the water softens into long white lines. A slower exposure lets me hold both in the same frame. I like the way it brings out the different paths the water takes, from the small drops in the woods to the wider falls coming down one shelf at a time.
I made these photographs in April and May 2026 with my Sony A7 IV and FE 28–70mm F3.5–5.6 OSS lens. The camera's 33-megapixel full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor records the texture around the moving water. These are six views that stood out to me, each with its own shape and rhythm.
